Due to its popularity on roads and other applications, it would be beneficial to find out how to clean oil spills on asphalt. Asphalt or ‘bitumen’ as it’s commonly referred to outside of the United States is a derivative of petroleum that is used for construction purposes. The most popular of these purposes is being used as a binding element on roadways to seal cracks and potholes. Asphalt is also commonly used as a way to pave driveways for homes and businesses.
However, when oil gets spilled on asphalt there are a few problems that occur. Asphalt (if it was paved a while ago) has the potential to develop small to large cracks where oil can drip. Also, when oil gets on asphalt it can cause unsightly stains that, when built up, can soften the asphalt and cause the asphalt to compress especially when weight is put upon the soft spot. Due to these soft spots and aforementioned cracks, oil has been known to be difficult to clean completely off of asphalt. However, with the introduction of Oil Solutions International’s products, this is no longer the case.
Using Oil Solutions Products to Clean Oil Spills on Asphalt
Cleaning fresh spills and long-time oil stains off of asphalt has never been easier with Oil Solutions oil clean up products. Our products work a bit differently than the competition in that the patented formula works to eliminate all factors of an oil spill. Using the science of microencapsulation on a molecular level, OS products neutralize the harmful effects of oil and other hydrocarbons and make them simple to clean. The oil spill, the associated stain and any offensive odor from the spill are eliminated completely and efficiently. The size and nature of the spill in question will determine which OS product you should use, but both will completely take care of your spill issue without any hassle.
For Small Spills or Old Stains: – OS Step 1 & Step 2 Liquid
For small spills, OS Step 1 & Step 2 Liquid are the best choice to take care of your problem. With a quick application and by following our steps you can quickly take care of a small localized spill:
- Try to stop the spill at the source to prevent any further oil from getting on the asphalt as you clean.
- Once the source of the spill has been controlled, spray OS Step 1 Liquid on the spill and then directly after spray OS Step 2 Liquid.
- Scrub the now mixed oil solution and wash away with water.
- Repeat steps 2 and 3 until spill is completely gone.
OS Step 1 & Step 2 Liquid are also your go-to product for any stains that have been on asphalt for an extended period of time. The microencapsulation properties of OS Step 1 & Step 2 Liquid work on the stain to remove it completely off of the asphalt; just follow these steps:
- Apply OS Step 1 Liquid to the entire area of the oil stain. Rub it into the stain with a rag.
- Apply OS Step 2 Liquid (in an equal portion to the amount of OS Step 1 Liquid used), this time letting it dry into the stain.
- Repeat steps 1 and 2 every 24 to 48 hours until the stain is eliminated.
For Larger Spills – OS Oil Absorbent Powder
In order to clean spills that are larger in volume or that are pooling on asphalt, it is recommended that OS Oil Absorbent Powder be used. It works just like OS Step 1 & Step 2 Liquid, in that the oil is neutralized and can be easily removed. An added benefit of OS Oil Absorbent Powder is that it results in a rubber byproduct which can be thrown away and picked up by your normal garbage service because it is EPA listed as Class-C landfill safe. To use OS Oil Absorbent powder on an oil spill on asphalt:
- Try to stop the spill at the source to prevent any further oil from getting on the asphalt as you clean.
- Once the spill is controlled, apply a generous amount of OS Oil Absorbent Powder to the entire area of the spill (don’t worry about overusing it in this step).
- Using a broom gather the rubber byproduct which has been produced and throw it away in a trash receptacle.
- Any excess OS Oil Absorbent Powder which is present on your asphalt surface from step 2 can now be gathered and put back in the bag for future use.
Tip: In case any oil has entered small cracks and crevices in your asphalt it is suggested to use OS Oil Absorbent Powder in conjunction with OS Step 1 & Step 2 Liquid for a complete clean.
